3 Things to Do After a Massage

After a massage, you’re sure to feel relaxed and at ease both physically and mentally. Perhaps to the point where your muscles feel as if they are melting off your bones. Still, there are some things you can do post-massage to make the experience even better. Massages can trigger some reactions in your body as it heals, and proper post-treatment care will help you feel your best. After your massage ends, put these three items on your to-do list:

Drink Water

It is essential to drink plenty of water after a massage. During massage therapy, your blood gets flowing, and as your muscles are manipulated, they release toxins. This combination of toxin release and increased blood flow means that the toxins circulate throughout your body quickly. Once the toxins are released, it’s important to flush them out of your body as soon as possible, and drinking water will speed up the process. Your blood needs water in it to keep it moving and doing its job of bringing oxygen and nutrients to your muscles, organs and other tissues. If you’ve ever heard people complain of feeling slightly ill after a massage, it’s usually because they’re dehydrated and those toxins are still in their systems. Keep in mind that drinking coffee, tea, soda or any other drink besides water is not the same as water. Make sure you drink plain, unflavored, uncarbonated water after your massage.

Rest

It’s not a good idea to leap up from the massage table and rush off to resume your busy day. Massages will leave you feeling loose, and, thanks to the release of toxins and increased blood flow, maybe even a little lightheaded. Take your time to ease up from the massage table, and sit for a few minutes to allow your body to adjust. Don’t schedule a massage for a time right before a strenuous workout or major work meeting; give yourself ample time to build back up to activity.

Eat a Snack

Because massage stimulates circulation, it can also stimulate digestion. Your electrolytes may become unbalanced, which can contribute the slight dizziness some people feel after a good massage. Eating a healthy snack will help restore your body’s balance and make you feel better.
